Telegram Stars vs cards: which to choose
Before launch you face a choice: enable Telegram Stars (Telegram's in-app currency) or accept normal cards via Stripe or a regional provider. Both work, but they solve different problems.
What are Telegram Stars
Stars are Telegram's in-app currency. Users buy them in advance and spend them on what they want: subscriptions, digital products, creator tips. Rate is roughly 1 Star ≈ €0.014 (floats). Users can buy Stars with a card, Google Pay, or Apple Pay directly inside Telegram.
Pros of Stars
- Zero friction for the buyer — two taps and done
- Works in every country where Telegram works (which is nearly everywhere)
- No Stripe account or regional processor required
- Telegram pays out to your bank account every 30 days
Cons of Stars
- Telegram takes ~30% fees — that's a lot
- 30-day payout lag doesn't work for cash-flow-sensitive businesses
- Cards are cheaper for the buyer: they already know their bank, no intermediary to buy first
When cards win
If you sell to a local audience (Ukraine, Poland, Czechia, etc.) a regional provider paying in local currency will be more comfortable both for your buyer and for you. Fees 2-3%, instant settlement, and a familiar invoice format.
Stripe is the default for international sales. Supports every major card, integrates with SEPA, caches cards for recurring charges. Fees 2.9% + €0.30 per transaction.
The best approach is both
On a serious platform you can wire several providers at once and let the buyer pick. Stars for impulse small purchases (€2-5), cards for higher-value subscriptions and digital products. Don't force your buyer to adapt to your tech choices.
